Dynamics of marine physical environments including air-sea interactions is one of the essential subjects for understanding of marine environments. This program covers a research of physical oceanography for general ocean circulation and coastal ocean dynamics based on field observations, data analysis and numerical modeling. Investigations in this program include studies on insitu estimation of the eddy diffusivity and dispersion process of particles in the surface layer by analyzing observational data of drifters and ADCP, studies on deep ocean circulation based on the analysis of moored current meter data and numerical modeling, and studies on coastal circulation in Suruga Bay and some bays on the Sanriku Coast including environmental impacts of tsunami. Researches on the dynamics of the Earth’s interior such as past geomagnetic field variations and past marine environments have also been conducted using sediments and rocks under the seafloor. The goal of this cooperative program is to educate students who have ability to study marine environmental dynamics from the sea surface to deep ocean with holistic and interdisciplinary perspective.
